Stand Out From the Crowd

Job hunting can be frustrating, especially in the tech industry. You know you have the potential to be a rockstar software developer, but you can't even get an interview to show off your skills. Recruiters at tech companies will look at your resume for no more than 30 seconds before deciding whether or not to give you an interview. I can help you make those 30 seconds count.

Debug My Resume

I Know Exactly What Recruiters Look For

I'm both a recruiter and a software developer. I've read a lot of resumes, good and bad, and I know exactly what recruiters are looking for in a software engineering resume. The goal of Debug My Resume is to share that knowledge with you, in a personalized format, so that you can get the most out of your job hunt.

"I think you did a great analysis of my resume. I appreciate how little time you took to respond, that too with such a comprehensive analysis."

Adithya Raghuraman, Carnegie Mellon University

"I really appreciate how specific your feedback was. I think they’ll definitely be useful for reworking some of my resume."

Elizabeth Viera, Carnegie Mellon University

About Me

Hey there, I'm Will. I graduated in computer science and robotics from Carnegie Mellon University and am now a full time software developer. A small part of my job is also to participate in the recruiting and hiring process which means attending job fairs, monitoring online job boards, and reading lots and lots of resumes. I noticed that many of the resumes we received just didn't have the information we were looking for from a recruiting standpoint. As a result, those candidates didn't get an interview.

Like most of you reading this, I had one of those "Resume Writing 101" classes in college which covered a lot of the basics, but there was nothing specific to writing resumes for a technical position. I think there are a lot of unspoken rules and nuance in this field that you just kind of have to stumble upon or otherwise figure out on your own, which leads to a surplus of lackluster resumes. My goal with Debug My Resume is to share the tricks that I've learned, both as an applicant who has been in your shoes, and as a recruiter who's read lots of resumes.

If you have any questions or comments, reach out to me via email or Twitter (icons under my picture). I'd love to hear from you. I'd also love to help you debug your resume.
